For almost 2 whole years I was entrenched in a raging gambling addiction. I allowed myself to submit to short term pleasure and greed, all for the sake of “having a good time”. What a poor bastard I had become. I would toil away tirelessly every week, dealing blackjack and craps for 50+ hours just so I could collect a measly pay check and then lost all my money on the crap table, just minutes after I cashed it in.

I started alienating my friends and family, and my life started to seem like an endless personal pity party. I began to tell myself lies in order to sidestep personal responsibility and accountability. My dreams and goals for my life started to fade, I had forsaken them. I was badly beaten, but there was still hope.

In the depths of my dark and depressed downward spiral, suddenly there was a light. The light came to me in a thought, and in just one blink of an eye, I knew. I knew right then and there that I had to make a change, I realized that I was so unhappy with my life because of myself. I wasn’t taking responsibility for my life. I was letting the outside world dictate my situation, and perpetuate my belief that the life I was living was as good as it would get. I refused to believe in a bigger picture and a more purposeful life.

  1. Don't know if anybody pointed this out: but your addiction lasted 21 months…a prophetic number! Good luck going forward! I personally think I'm addicted to making money more than simply gambling, but I'm working on it! Thanks man.

  2. I am also addicted to BlackJack, except that I come from a pretty well off family, father is a business tycoon so I have access to large amounts of money and I never play less than $500 USD per hand. So I usually do really well or else I lose a lot. I guess I am a thrill seeker with no purpose in life except to double down on a 6 and 5 or look for that next BlackJack. Now picture this.. you just put your last $500 down on a hand and you've been dealt a face card along with a 6, so your hand is 16, and dealer is showing an Ace. "Insurance is open"… 🙂
