Poker Strategy Info And Source:

One more #HelloAlec for this week is coming from my reader Joe. He played this hand online and won. Anyway, he wants to know should he jam this river for value. What would be your strategy in this type of situation?

  1. Hi @Alec Torelli I'm playing a 1/2/4 live cash game in the UK, was wondering what you think of this hand, super aggro game, with 2 other regs that were in the cut off and button in this game, I was in the hijack, i had a 1.9k stack, the cut off had about 1.6k, button had about 1k, cut off and I limp, button makes it 30, we both call, I have 85 suited, flop 642 rainbow, flop a double gutter, i check flop, cut off donks for 90, button calls, i call, turn 3 adding a possible backdoor flush draw, i make my straight with the redraw to the absolute nuts, i lead out for 200, cut off reraises to 600, button folds, i tank shove, cut off calls, he has 75, gg

  2. Once villain checks behind on the turn, most people would think they're good with jamming on the river for value. But since this guy is obviously a thinking opponent, since he's 3Betting with A3s, wouldn't he also be smart enough to check behind AA or KK on the turn on that board? Considering the board runout by the turn and the fact that hero flatted his three bet, the only thing he'd be considerably worried about with AA or KK is a set of 10s or possibly AK of spades that is on a flush draw. Besides that, I don't really see much that he would be worried about. So I think a check with AA or KK is a very possible move in villains arsenal on the turn for deception. At this level, people aren't just going to do the "standard" thing with AA or KKs all the time, especially against thinking players like hero in this instance. But what happens if hero goes for thin value on the river and then gets jammed over the top? Then we're basically forced to fold or make a crying call. Thoughts?

  3. I don't like villains play! If he is going to min raise you, then C-bet he is almost committed half of his stack and if he thinks you are not that strong it should have been defo all-in not min raise preflop. If he is behind he has 25%chance most likely it is a flip with a great fold equity.

With a tight play hero might lose big chunk of his stack if he bets the river as only better hands would call. Other than inflated pot I think the play was pretty normal ?!

  4. By the river, Hero already knows he is ahead and would call a shove from villain given all possible hands he might be holding. I see two benefits for jamming: 1- by making his opponent folding he wins the pot uncontestly and thus his tight image remains and it will be good for stealing and bully; 2- in case he gets called = maximum value.

  5. I wouldn't jam the river, bit I would bet half of his stack on the river as a defense bet so you can't be bluffed out of the pot while also allowing a larger range to call for showdown.

  6. This is a very challenging hand for low stakes players to answer. I'll give it a shot. I believe the first instance he will be unbalanced towards weak ace high and 1 pair hands due to the turn check. On river, While he probably wont call with worse he could some % of the time.
About balance. In one hand its not terribly important but over time could be crucial against a thinking player looking to exploit imbalancew. In situations where he is imbalanced, however we should look to exploit him while keeping ou4 range composition in mind for future hands in the given situation.
Because I feel we can hit two birds with one stone; exploit his likely weak range and balanc3 future bluffs, we have a good bet here.
This is difficult because most times low stakes thinking is what does he have, will he call with worse but high level is what does my range look to him now and into the future and how to adjust it.

  7. On a check call, you know he'd bet/jam the turn with any over pairs, given the flush draw and your range which is pretty high, but reduced to flush draws, A10 suited, and low pocket pairs and possibly jj/qq through your play here.
Would you check aces/kings in this spot? Highly unlikely given that 4bet. Not a bad play perhaps, a tricky one to have in the books, 4betting small, if you can represent aces/kk here.. You'd fold out squeeze bluffs and only get reraised with kk, aa or ak really, and have that option to represent the nuts preflop. But not a great play in the long run I'd imagine. In any case the point I was making was that your range is narrowed down by your checking the turn too. His c-bet may make you wary with another overpair, but knowing that, why wouldn't he then bet if he had kk/qq/jj/even AK if he knows your range. Your check means your range is limited further to flush draws, not even a10, and low pocket pairs by the turn, so why wouldn't he jam it if he had pocket pairs?
Your jamming on that river though… agreed with 7pro, wouldn't accomplish much, while only getting you called vs overpairs which could be in his tricky play/cautious play I guess. Good check.

  8. I really don't like the pre-flop raise, you have a drawing hand just see a flop
