6 thoughts on “Poker Strategy: Should We Call Down With Second Pair

  1. Okay a lot to say on this one…First off, villains value bet on the river is perfect. He knows exactly where you are. As played Id call river. Besides that I would have played most of the hand different. Before i get into the hand, have some trouble with your accent. Did you say we block QJ? huh? how do we block QJ? IS THIS Stavros Georgiadis? Because that would be amazing LOL. Anyway for me this is mostly a 3bet preflop. 3 bet pre id 50/50 check/bet flop, this flop. As played, I ignore these 10-20% pot bets on flop and turn. (I do use 10-20% pot bets; mostly in PLO and only on the river in both flop games.) I would treat this flop bet as a check. Treat the bet as dead money. Bet two-thirds pot. HAHA @4:17 bart cant believe how much story he is getting. TURN! I think this bet sizing is still weakness. I think if we raise on the turn we fold out most of his hands. All weak Ks some draws.Even strongish hands are in a really bad spot if he is a good player. Depending on what he thinks of you.  Plus if we just get a call we can check back on the river. Or decide on a bluff depending on the river. We should be able to bluff a diamond or a 9. Look like we have QdJd. Or bomb river and continue to tell the story of a set. Can also value bet hitting two pair or trips. But i like turning my hand into a bluff at this point.

  2. You were simply outplayed, and your hand was pretty face up. Perhaps a river raise would have worked however, maybe just a bit over a min-raise representing a k for value… Hard to believe the "fish" folded for a measly 9 into 69…that's almost 8-1…ATC territory, unless he had 6-7 suited with no backdoor flush maybe…I mean what is really that bad to fold getting 8-1?

  3. Whenever I try to play the calling game I get wrecked kind of like you did here. A 3 bet pre would have been better than just calling. The only hands I would flat would be hands with good implied odds like pocket pairs.. Your hand plays terrible to an early position raiser. Fold preflop. After the flop, raising his tiny flop bet would have saved you money. Being a caller only works against people that overbluff and will keep bluffing even after you call. Most people just stop bluffing once you call or then they bet big and make you pay when they do improve on later streets.

  4. Great spot for a x/r bluff on the river. Too above the rim, Bart? Hah! Jk I play 1/2. Love the content!

  5. I think hero’s hand is a perfect candidate for a bluff on the river. The way he described hero, seems like a guy capable of value betting thin, hero blocks the more nutted value betting range of 10 10 and A K. I’m however more of a recreational player and late in a session on a table that’s about to break I’m going to lock it up and fold here.
