For simplicity purposes, let’s focus on reading just the flop texture. If the flop comes K♥ 3♠ 8♦, that’s a dry board. This is the type of board you want to see if you’re holding a hand like AA or AK. It’s not the kind of board you want to see if you’re holding 9♠ 8♠.

If the flop comes K♥ Q♥ J♦, that’s a wet board. It’s a wet board because there are so many possibilities for a strong hand, including a flush draw, a made straight or a straight draw, the increased likelihood of two pair, and of course, a set. Two pair is more likely because that board falls into the range of most players.

Players are more likely to be involved with a hand like KQ, QJ, or KJ than 74, 83, or T2. If the flop came 749, 83K, or T29, the likelihood of two pair would be much lower.

And a set is always possible.

You want to see a wet board when you’re holding drawing cards. You also want to see a wet board when you’re heads-up and you’re opponent raised big pre-flop. This situation allows you to represent hitting that board and betting out to steal the pot.
