flush, full house, 4 of a kind, and straight flush.

The strongest poker hand is a straight flush which is 5 cards consecutively ordered like 5-6-7-8-9 and all the same suit

Next best is 4 of a kind like KKKK

Next is a full house like KKK-99 three cards of one rank + a pair

Next best hand is a flush which is 5 cards all the same suit

Next best is the straight which is 5 cards of different suit consecutively ordered like 7-8-9-10-J or A-2-3-4-5 is also a straight.

below that is a 3 of a kind which is 3 cards same rank. Also called a set or trips.

Next we have 2 pair

and finally a pair

if no one has a made hand, the player with the highest single card wins.

To break a tie, the player with the higher ranked cards wins. In the case of a full house the player with the higher 3 cards is ahead. ex AAA-KK is better than KKK-AA

In the case of a straight A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest and 10-J-Q-K-A Is the highest

Poker hands are ranked according to the probability of catching the hand. Rare combinations like straight flush, quads (4 of a kind) and a full house are all ranked high since they are rare. Lower ranked combinations like a simple pair are ranked low because they are frequent and common.

5 card draw probability estimates

Straight flush probability – 1 in72,000
quads probability – 1 in 4000
full house probability – 1 in 700
flush probability – 1 in 500
straight probability – 1 in 250
3 of a kind probability – 1 in 45

  1. poker hands are easy. The only initial confusion might be the straight vs flush. Once that is sorted out it's intuitive. The main thing to know for beginner is that the suits are not important. That greatly reduces the perceived complexity. Once you see you are only dealing with the rank pairings and one consecutive and one flush same suits it becomes clear.

  2. poker hand rankings are based on the probability of catching that combination of cards. There is a list of probabilities in the description. It is for 5 card draw. If you are looking for Texas Hold'em probabilites Wikipedia has some good pages on it. You hardly ever see a royal flush and for good reason. The probability is 1/70,000 still way better odds than a lottery though.

  3. Some charts show the "royal flush" as a separate poker hand but it is somewhat redundant as it is only a straight flush which happens to be the best possible straight flush but a straight flush nonetheless. It would be like calling a 10-JQKA straight a "royal straight" It's just a straight.

  4. Great vid! I also learned a lot from Ace Poker Drills. It's a poker training application in quiz style format. Anyone interested can check it here: www.acepokerdrills.com
