The art of edge sorting is a rare skill that very few can accomplish, but for those who do so without getting caught, the strategy can be very lucrative indeed. Edge sorting is a technique that allows card players to define the suit and number of a face down card. This is done by the player studying the back of the playing cards intensely, and eventually memorising the exact pattern of each and every card in the deck/s. CasinoTop10 offers great insight into the technique’s pros and cons.

Phil Ivey – putting edge sorting in the spotlight

Lately edge sorting has been getting quite a bit of media attention, due to poker superstar Phil Ivey. The pro poker player was taken to court by London based Casino Crockford’s after it was brought to their attention that he was using this technique to win millions of pounds from casinos in London and New Jersey. Phil was found guilty and the casino got to keep the £7.7 million in winnings that Ivey had won but they had wisely withheld. It was also ruled that ‘edge sorting’ was considered cheating under civil law. Ivey of course bit back with a counter lawsuit stating that the casino could have and should have taken the proper measures to protect itself from edge sorting and the likes. Ivey was also sued by the Borgata Casino in New Jersey saying that he had swindled away millions with the same technique. Both casino used the same brand and pattern of playing suit from Gemco.

What is edge sorting?

Avid gamblers are known to be a superstitious bunch, so croupiers are used to getting all kinds of odd requests from players. In most casinos, the player’s requests are met within reason, especially if the table is filled with high rollers and pro players. This is where edge counting gets its leverage. Most packs of playing cards have random and unintended differences on the pattern on the back of the cards. This A player who is sitting at a table may ask the dealer to turn a card or two 180◦ for good luck. Since the pattern on the back of the cards is not completely symmetrical, players can detect this and keep in mind the value of the card and the pattern placement.
As the player makes certain requests to the dealer for ‘good luck’, the dealer does not realise that the player is three steps ahead of him. In fact the player is persuading the unwitting croupier into turning the cards in such a way that the low cards are one way around and the high cards the opposite. This helps the player to decide whether the next card to be upturned is a high or low value card. Another wish that the gamblers often make is to have the cards shuffled with an automatic shuffler. This is to make sure that the cards always stay in the same orientation. A manual deal will completely mess up all the careful planning that goes into a successful edge sorting technique.
As the player makes random requests over the course of a session, one at a time most of the cards will eventually take on the correct positioning. The professional edge sorter now has a substantial edge over the house, and is in the perfect position to reap in the big money. This technique has been deemed illegal under civil law as the player is actually tricking the dealer into becoming an accomplice to the advantageous behaviour. There is of course a loophole! Should a player manage to edge sort the cards without the unknowing help of a croupier or casino employee then the technique is not seen as cheating.

Beat the house edge

For as long as gambling has been around and for as long as it continues to offer big wins and thrills, players will try to beat the house edge. With more advanced ways to beat the odds and take home the big money, casinos need to keep up to date with all the latest and greatest strategies and techniques. Other well known and loved strategies include card counting and the parole strategy. These two strategies are not considered illegal although card counting can get you kicked out of the casino. Just ask Ben Affleck who was allegedly asked to leave the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas for trying the shady strategy. To get more information on the parole strategy, check out the video from CasinoTop10 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBXPQ…

  1. Flat colored cards and not catering to gamblers bullbad would seem to stop this crap, otherwise, these casinos need to quit bitching. You got hustled, stop letting them catch you slipping lol

  2. How can this give you advantage on baccarat? You dont have control of the cards on that game

  3. Rich guy gets greedy and wants to get richer. Casinos greedy, you can't cheat an honest man. Rich guy gets caught and will get a slap on the hand and take a hit to his reputation and
    casino moguls will get greedier.

  4. They were so excited to host Phil, they were stupid enough to cave to all his demands. The casino should have played with solid color cards, rotated decks, and not allowed his asian gaming partner into the building. They literally gave him the advantage. Phil didn't cheat, he's just very experienced and has a great memory for edge sorting.

  5. You walk into a casino to lose so something is wrong when someone keeps winning

  6. As far as I know in Baccarat you must place your bet before the dealer pulls any card out of the deck and you can not raise or lower your bet after any card is pulled out the deck. This video does not explain how he cheated because even though he gets to run free hands cards are pulled out in certain sequence and edge sorted cards are not likely to be consistently high numbers or low numbers meaning that in 8 decks of cards there will be low cards and high cards that are sorted identically.
