HOLD’EM OR FOLD’EM WITH POCKET ACES? [E8 Poker Strategy]

  1. The way we played this hand it is the most obvious call ever (or should I say "HOLDEM"). If we think about all the hands we can have that call the min bet on the flop and check back the turn this is basically the best hand we can have. We shouldn't even have this hand here because it should have been played differently.

Our value range is so thin here that we have to put our money in with this holding. We might wake up with hands like 89 clubs that called flop and slow played turn to allow a bluff? Maaaaaaaybe quads?? We could also have some hands like AJ that hit a jack on the river.
But normally here I would expect hands like just A high or a low/mid pocket pair.
We shouldn't really have many other value hands

The villain should be value betting any 9, and can bet any Q pretty confidently (although I don't think villain has this!) Villain can even value bet a J on the end here. villain could be turning J10 into a bluff here (which is bad but could be happening). If I was the villain and I had a J, q, 9 or any pair really I would be betting big here as I just can't see Hero having a hand like a flush that can call an all in.

So here's how I would play the hand.

Raise pre flop, if I face a 3 bet then I 4 bet hoping to get it in.

On the flop ignore is donk and raise it to 14-16c. I I face a re-raise then I let it go, If he calls look to continue on turns where I pick up equity such as any club K or A J or 10 – and let bad turns go (such as blanks, however if a Q comes then I might fire out a bluff and see if I can take the pot down now as I don't see his donk leading this size with a Q)
You also want to put your foot down a bit when people donk lead into you. This board is better for your raising range than it his villains calling range.

Turn brings a club draw but pairs the board. If the villain checks then I would most likely bet again here as we've picked up a lot of equity and we could still be good here against a hand like J10. We can also get a lot of weak hands that are beating us to fold such as a 5 or low pocket pairs etc. We don't get any Q to fold and of course not a 9, but we till have outs to beat those hands (and we still have some fold equity sadly). If we check back it looks weak and on most blanks the villain can bluff us off the hand and we sort of have to fold our A high.
If the villain leads into us then I would certainly just call as we don't want to be 3 bet and get us of this nice hand. We could also be charging worse flush draw here although that is less likely as we have 2 clubs.

On this river if the villain leads into me I would put in a big raise. We most likely have the best hand here. If we get coolered then thats fine. Sometimes this happens and we just have to give that man his money.
I would love the chance to put all my money in here. We beat almost any hand that he has here, I can sort of see villain waking up with JJ however not too sure about this. All full houses should be checking flop and betting turn. Or if they donk flop definitely leading turn and river. I don't see a 9 or 55 leading flop and then checking turn.

P.S at these stakes I wouldn't be surprised if villain has J5 or something!!

  2. why its always the good looking men from european countries who crush online poker lol

  3. I think the AceKing of Clubs hand is a reluctant fold. The min raise PF is usually a pocket pair, maybe a big pair as well. The Donk bet I see at these stakes is either a middling pair trying to steal the pot, or a monster. Like pocket 5's, or Queens. If villain had a middling pair he gets there on the turn. The question is does he have a set or the full house on the river. I think if I have a better read, maybe I call. But, this is a fold. I could be wrong, but I don't see a lot of river bluffs at these stakes. He probably has it.

  4. Holdem.

We assume that the villain is recreational player from the way he played.
Even if he is not bluffing we are ahead of recreational player's relative range. And we are ahead by a lot. And i can take away a lot of the combos to make him nittier and we still are more than 50/50. We have to put 1.65$ to win 4.37 dollars if my math is correct. So we make the correct call here every time against a recreational player. Against regs or nits i would consider folding because all the flushes that the opponents could have are Q high and they do not go crazy with them. They will just call. Also they will not go crazy there with just trips. They will also call.

  5. Hi Felix – Charlinhow that's not Marcin Szczur thats me 😉
( love the way you read my difficult for a foreigner surnaname ) despite this very intresting hand and insta call 😉 on NL2

  6. At those stakes, I'd almost expect someone who hit a full house (or quads) on the turn there to check.

At the same time, the river bet could easily be a weaker flush, or possibly even a straight.

I think I'd be calling this, but I could see it going either way. With that being said, I don't know that I would've taken that hand any further than the flop in the first place.

  7. Villains line represent a hand, which wanted to see a cheap showdown, but got there on the river. We lose to JJ, but beat weaker flushes. Even though there are not that many logical flushes, when we have both the A and K of it, there is also only 3 combos of JJ, so we have to call.

If he can have a flopped set or J9 and play it this way, he can also do other weird things like overplaying a straight or two pair on the river, or run some crazy bluff with a random hand. At the end of the day its 2NL, and without massive info I cant make a huge laydown like this against players with a fishy looking line. If he has it this time, good for him.
