Your Guide to Poker: Pre Flop Strategy

Texas Holdem Tips Video Source & Information:

Hi guys, it’s Dominic here!

Today’s episode is dedicated to the earliest stage in poker Texas Holdem, the pre-flop and its strategy. In Poker there are four betting rounds
the pre-flop stage, in which each player gets two cards face down
the flop, in which 3 cards are dealt face-up in the middle of a table
the turn, in which 1 more card is added face-up in the middle of the table
the river, in which the 5th and the last card is dealt in the middle of the table

In this video, we will focus on the strategy at the pre-flop stage, which will help you to make better decisions throughout the rest of the hand.

First, you must carefully evaluate your starting hand. Decide whether you are going to rise, check or fold.

The best hands in Texas Holdem are big pocket pairs such as a pair of Aces or pair of Kings, followed by suited connectors, such as AQ or KQ. Big connectors such as AK or AJ are also great hands. Of course, there are still other cards that could do well at this stage of the game, but for beginner players, it’s better to play on the safe side.

Where you sit at a table is extremely important. In early positions, when you’re the first to make a decision, you should play very tight – meaning you should only call or rise with good hands. When you are in a middle or late position, you can play a bigger range of cards as you have an advantage. You are able to see what your opponents decide to play first.

Remember to always consider your opponents when making decisions at pre-flop. Before you take a look at your cards, have a look at how other players react when viewing their cards. Observe other players when you fold. See what type of decisions they make. Try to figure out their style of playing. Do they play more aggressively or tighter?

Ask yourself these questions. Make observations and put the information which you gather to use.

Most importantly do not be afraid to make bets or raises before the flop.

If you are afraid to lose money, play at tables with the lowest possible stakes. Don’t forget that poker is a game which you learn your whole life. Practicing, losing and winning will help you to recognize your own playing style and improve your game.
