The Sunk Cost point is a little misleading. While each decision is independent of previous decisions, the previous decisions (to put a lot of chips in the middle) are influencing the current decisions because they have increased the pot size. If you are 90% certain you are beaten, but you're getting 20-1 odds on another bet, it's positive EV to make a call, even though it is the "wrong" decision because you are so unlikely to win.
