Investing Is Like Poker

Learn Poker Video Source & Info:

An important lesson on in investing strategy using some interesting parallels with the game of poker.

This investing lesson runs through a few really important topics that can make you think a bit differently about your investing strategy.

Some things that are much more obvious in a game of poker may not be as obvious when you’re thinking of your investing decisions, but the parable can be a powerful way to think about it from a different perspective.

If you have a long term investing strategy, this can be a great way to think about some of the things you do differently and challenge some of the established narratives.

I hope you find this investing strategy tutorial useful.

  1. Sasha have you made a video of how you spend your day/week, time you get up, how many hours analysing investments etc… I'd be interested to know

  2. Hi Sasha, great content 👍 Please could you make a video on Freetrade’s crowdfunding investment?

  3. I actually equate it to sports betting which I also do ie looking for value bets the same way I do companies whos share price could rise

  4. As a seasoned poker player I agree with much of what you say. Plenty of similarities between the two. As you say, stocks and poker are about waiting for info to be revealed and reacting accordingly, folding when necessary (most don’t do this enough).

The one part I disagreed with (if I understood you correctly) is when you said it is harder to play poker against beginners as they are more unpredictable. This is untrue in my experience but it is something you will frequently hear said.

Top level players will often play Game Theory Optimal (GTO) strategy, meaning they randomise their calls, bets and raises, but based around set frequencies. Therefore, in any given hand you won’t know what they have as they could be folding 10%, calling 40% and raising 50% on an ace high flop for example with a certain hand type. They are essentially unexploitable and unpredictable.

Beginners on the other hand are often very predictable. They either raise too much, call too much or fold too much. This can be identified and exploited.

No idea how what I have said above relates to stocks though but poker wise I just thought I would mention it! 😀

  5. I’ve played 100,000 poker hands online and agree with everything you said. Any poker player can play brilliantly and make the right decisions but lose at times, but in the end ev (expected value) will make you profitable, you just have to make consistent correct decisions with the information you have and don’t get swept away by the currents of bad luck (similar to not over reacting to Mr Market!)
