Finding where to start with your poker learning is first a matter of defining your goals. Do you just want to limit your losses and beat your friendly low stakes home game, or do you have more serious dreams of heading to Las Vegas to play high stakes poker 4-Handed with Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson, and Daniel Negreanu?

It doesn’t matter whether you want to learn online no limit hold’em or live pot limit Omaha — if you see yourself in poker for the long haul, you need to have a solid understanding of poker fundamentals beyond simple poker tips and memorization. Lacking a strong base foundation of knowledge means that if you try to learn something that is more complicated, you’ll lack the understanding needed to execute properly.

If you don’t understand the ‘why’ behind your actions, anytime a player acts outside the things you’ve memorized, you’re going to have to improvise — and with weaker base knowledge you are not going to improvise as well as you should.

  2. What should learn first in poker is that variance is your biggest enemy not the players.
