Like I say in today’s clip, supporting yourself from poker full time is a whole different ball game from playing poker part-time along with your day job. One of the most important concepts to nail first if you want to be a poker pro is to establish your success with a ton of results. Even if it takes you longer to go pro you just cannot know if the life of a professional poker player will actually be something you can sustain unless you already have a long history of success.

Poker players have to be able to endure far more than just a bad beat or two every session. As a professional poker player you have to have the mindset, and the bankroll, to go long stretches of time while either losing money or breaking even.

For some people keeping a cool head when the variance of poker has reared its sick head is not possible without the extended break, change of focus, and security that a different source of income might afford.

Are you a new poker player or a poker beginner? Do you just need the best poker strategy and best poker tips or do you have a high stakes poker related question you’d like a poker professional’s advice on? Leave a comment and your question might end up in the next one of these quick poker tips videos!

  1. Yeah, I tried it and found that as soon as it went from a hobby to a job, the fun went out of it.

  2. Hey Phil,

What sort of sample size and win rate is sufficient for one to tell that they are a winning player at those stakes long term?

I.e. when and how to know when it’s ok to make that switch and quit and go full time?

  3. Hi Phil I have a question ..when is time to withdraw? Can sound a stupid question but I really would like an opinion please

  4. Hey Phil. How many hours of live poker do you think someone needs to be confident in their ability to go pro? Assuming their current hours show a significant winrate.

  5. You can also play really well and have bad luck so yeah, you need the roll to handle the swings

  6. I dunno man, how many top players worked part time whilst building skills/roll etc? And how many just went for it and dedicated themselves ? Yea they prob had some rough times because if this but that may also be considered invaluable and necessary lessons on their success path

  7. This is the exact same advice I give anyone who wants to start their own business. Do what you love everyday and you turn what you love into a job.
