Call or Fold: Would You Fold the Second Nuts?

It’s great to make a hand as strong as the second nuts. That is until you face enormous aggression from a tight player! Check out this epic hand of the day and decide what you would do once your powerhouse hand is reduced to a mere bluff-catcher. Our hero has J9 suited on the button and even though he is behind the range of a tight under-the-gun player, he opts to call because stacks are deep and he is confident he can outplay his opponent with position. The K-Q-8 rainbow board does not produce any fireworks as both players check. On the 5 of diamonds turn, our hero picks up a flush draw to go with his gutshot, and when it is checked to him, he decides to semi-bluff (although he could have bet larger to apply more pressure). The villain calls. When the 10 of spades hits on the river and the villain leads, it appears that everything has worked out perfectly! Hero has a clear raise, and likely should have sized bigger to get value from hands like 10-10 and Q-10s. Almost instantly after min-raising the river, the villain jams all-in. He is representing AJ for the nuts, and he has very few bluffs or overplayed value hands the way the hand has played out. Hero is blocking AJ, but blocking does not remove the combinations entirely. Even ifthe villain does not open AJ off-suit from UTG, his range is likely AJ suited and nothing else when he takes this line on the river. Our hero makes a hero fold, but it’s also likely the correct fold, even with the second nuts.

Call or Fold: Would You Fold the Second Nuts?

10 thoughts on “Call or Fold: Would You Fold the Second Nuts?

  1. Bet half
Pot on flop if he calls check turn and call any bet at river as long as it’s not too big shut up Alec u made this way more complicated wasted a whole 10minutea of my life why. Tf is he gonna raise river after he bet that’s a donkey ass raise

  2. Man can’t believe iwasted my life on this please stop making videos ur a great player but not a great teacher anyone who wants advice watch Brad Owens vlogs

  3. I doubt he also has J9s from UTG. The Range is heavily weighted towards (AJ) and (TT). Depending on the Guy maybe (KT) or (QT).

  4. Great review alex real in-depth professional advice overall, really liked the mental game aspect

  5. He could have TT, AJ, QT suited, maybe QT off suit if loose player for value. Maybe turning AdTd into a bluff.

  6. I’ve found that from good grinding creative players it can be a bluff and from recreational players who are just so excited with the nuts it’s probably never a bluff.

  7. Villains likely range on river with this check, check-call, lead river line on KQ8-5-T no flush board.
AJ (12), QT (9), TT (6), and maybe 8Ts (2), super thin so unlikely. With that range looks like 54% equity. If we remove 8Ts it’s almost exactly 50/50.
