PokerCoaching coach Bert ‘girafganger7’ Stevens makes a sick hero call with just king high that resulted in him winning the tournament for a mouth watering $1,100,000!

This hand was played heads up during a $10,000 GG Poker Super MILLION$. I review this spot from a GTO perspective and we can see if he made the correct theoretical decisions or whether he was completely out of line!

  1. What would YOU do with K♣ Q♥ on the turn?

    Your Stack (BB): 19,132,016

    Their Stack (BTN): 37,867,984

    Pot: 12,300,000

    Board: A♥ 3♦ 2♣ 3♥

    A) Check/Fold

    B) Check/Call

    C) Bet 3,000,000 (small)

    D) Bet 5,000,000 (large)

  2. I think it’s a clear check-call. The 3 is way better for limper’s range than raiser’s, but you can call a smallish bet if you assume button doesn’t have an ace…

  3. I was surprised a bit that the solver has very similar frequencies for all KQo calling at the end, I would think that having the Qh would be a negative since you block the backdoor flush draws QXhh.

  4. I assume the 3 is close to a check range card. We have some K3 and A3 as open bluffs but they have every suited 3 and they are definitely calling the flop with any pair. As for check fold v check call with an A on the board KQ is a reasonably strong high card hand (Qh not ideal though) which should mostly put us at call (we can fold to large enough bets since we still have As and large hh hands to call with since I want to check basically everything here, but not to a small bet).

  5. Jerome's range is wide here. Bert has very little reason to think he is behind right now KQ is pretty strong. But a bad river card could make it hard to call. This is one time a blocker bet might help you. Makes it look like a value bet. So I am saying "bet small" of the choices given. If you get shoved on then you have to be probably fold. But you are better off than using a check-call (which was my first reaction) and not much worse off chip count wise.

  6. Check/Call. (to a certain level) I am not calling a shove etc but somewhere in the $3m range . I still have $19m – enough to come back

  7. Turn I’d look to check, call. Opponent may float very wide on flop and will feel compelled to bluff. Not comfortable calling on the river tho…

  8. Hey big city! How do you manage your poker money with online sites and stuff, do you play and then take your roll of the site? Do you have different bank savings accounts? One account for poker and another one for buying pizza and movie tickets? Would you suggest opening a bank account strictly for poker? Do I have to report winnings to IRS government? Not trying to go to jail boss!
