It’s comforting to know that not even Phil 100% knows the answer to some of these seemingly simple poker questions!

Like Phil says in today’s poker tip, try to remain consistent with whatever you choose to answer because players will read into your speech play.
Some poker players are afraid and don’t want to call and be shown a bluff, some people will get curious and just really want to know what you had, if you’re very comfortable at the table you can respond differently to each and find ways to exploit these weaknesses in your opponents’ mental game strategy.

How to Answer “Will You Show If I Fold?”

  1. I was on the rail if two tables left for a ring event. And herd the best answer ever. Maurice Hawkins opens BB defends to the tune of like A86 Hawkins’s C bets, gets check raised by like this farmer looking kinda guy (Cherokee NC). Hawkins calls, turn brick can’t remember. But BB leads, and Maurice asks that question. And it was the best answer ever, guy with a chew in his mouth. Looks Hawkings dead in the eyes and says “Maurice id love to show you”. My mind was blown. Maurice hmmmms and hahhhs and flashes an ace and folds. My man tables 55 like a boss.

  2. is it binding if you say "yes" to that question? is it considered an angle shot to answer yes there and then not show?

  3. I just don't reply, there's no win in replying. It's hard to judge how they will interpret things.

Of course saying yes to showing would generally mean you are happy with a fold and saying no would mean you want a call. But of course it will just become a he thinks that I think game. Rather give nothing away.

  4. The best answer when they ask “do u want action” is….. “never ask a barber if u need a hair cut, because the answer is always yes”

  5. I do the opposite. After my opponent shoves all-in I say "if I show, will YOU fold?"

It throws them off because it's backwards of what they're used to hearing. It generally elicits a real reaction from them, allowing me to get a read.

As an example, they'll often repeat my question back to me as they think it through and realize what I actually asked, and then if their laugh/response seems forced, they're uncomfortable with the strength of their hand, allowing me to make a lighter hero call.

Likewise if their laugh/response seems natural, they are comfortable with their hand strength, allowing me to make a laydown in a tough spot
