How To THINK Like A Poker Pro [Flop Strategy Analysis]

Poker Strategy Info And Source:

In this video, I’m going to show you how to think about poker hands like high stakes end-boss, Jason Koon.

A few weeks ago Jason Koon released a blog post entitled ‘It’s the Same Game But It Isn’t’. In it, he talks about how the game moves slower at the highest stakes because decisions are now much more complex and this doesn’t usually translate to a great spectacle for the average viewer.

In the blog he even says that players competing at the highest levels in poker are faced with similarly complex situations that are difficult to solve, and often it’s challenging to understand what these players are thinking about without a fundamental understanding of game theory.

He goes on to discuss a typical thought process during a hand by listing some example questions that he’s trying to answer during one of these 10-30 second decision points, so today I thought it would be great to show you how to answer those questions using PIOSolver.

We’re going to take longer than that, but the idea is that the more of this kind of analysis you do away from the table, the quicker you’ll get in the heat of the battle.

Now I’m not going to begin to think I can analyse on the same level as Jason Koon, but I can certainly show you the methodology or the how-to if you will, to set you on the path to his level of mastery.

  1. Hope you get a lot out of the great blog post by Jason Koon. Also, don't forget to let us know if you want to see the turn and river analysis!

  2. I would love to see the turn and River analysis please! I'm just an amateur player and learnt a lot from the first analysis. For example I would've raised every time hitting top 2 pair on the flop but I can see why that's not the best move now

  3. Hi Gareth, im interested in playing poker as a amateur on WPN with a bankroll of 1000 playing 10 dollar tourneys mostly on the weekends. I've seen some videos in regards to the basics of NL tournament poker and would like a coaching session mainly for understanding how to use solvers (pio) and huds. Goal is to have fun and learn more than what I know now. I've played Abit preblack Friday on stars and tilt. What are your coaching prices? Thanks.

  4. Great video, Gareth. I understand the logic of the solver choosing to raise most frequently with this exact K7o combo. I try to look for practical applications for these kind of scenarios that can't realistically be exploited by a human who has a limited amount of hands with us and is unlikely to know our exact thought process. Seeing this result, I would be inclined to start my baseline as always raising this exact combo, raising the other Kh combos half the time and never raising the non-heart combos. Is this too much of a simplification or is this an effective way to split our range, knowing that the vast majority of our opponents won't ever question our exact suit usage and even if they do, it's hard for them to ever build a reliable enough sample and effective counter-strategy in the span of the time we're at the table together. The exception would of course be the high roller scene and probably the HSMTT pool too. I could imagine that knowing a player strongly prefers aggressive actions with preferable suits could be exploited with some quick assumptions and then moreso with work off the tables.

  5. Good content. Quick question, as we have no sets on the flop meaning theyre in the 3bet pf range would we be calling a 4bet jam with 22?
