While stacking your opponents chips playing live poker at a casino and building thousand big blind stacks while playing online poker can be entertaining and a rush, the insane potential emotional highs can also result in insane potential emotional loss.

The truth is that poker isn’t for everybody, especially if they don’t start playing poker with the right mindset.

You can adjust your mindset by learning some important poker concepts like: the fact that poker is a game with gambling at its core, the fact that there are no guaranteed wins even with a high win rate, or how to properly use a bankroll and bankroll management.

Continuing to improve your understanding of poker’s most important concepts still may not make poker a game for you.

Poker, like any other form of gambling, can be addictive.

A healthy relationship with playing poker, and gambling in general, is key to maintaining a long career as a poker professional or as a recreational poker player playing for fun.

One last point: even poker pros can be addicted or see negative side effects from making a living playing poker!

  1. You win some, you lose some. Its how it goes. Some people cant handle ups and downs in life and poker is very much the same.

It can teach you some sort of social skills, emotion control, empathy (the true definition of it), glimpses into the psychological impacts of a situation to a human body and brain etc.. General very useful stuff.

Problem arises when people play just for the money. Ofcourse it will suck. Everything bad if you don't love it, if you don't grow from it, through it.

    End of incoherent ramble.

  2. Poker has destroyed my life in so many ways, i dont even want to think about where i would be in life if it werent for this soul crushing game. I hate it more then anything but i cant stop, im to stubborn. Im not bad, i just run terrible. Its weird how bad i run. I constantly get it in 90/10 in PLO and still lose. Its getting weird and unrealistic at this point. I want to just stop but i cant, i have invested to much money and time to quit. Im gonna follow it through til the end. Even if it cost me my life.

  3. What people dont understand aswell is for people to be winners other have to lose and with rake, the majority of players are losers in theong run but a lot of people are indenial and blame luck or bad runs etc.

  4. My golden rule for any gambling: don't gamble what you can't lose. I've done plenty of 1k buy I knowing it's ok to lose it all. I'm up all time in my play, but that's probably why, I'm not worry about the money. It's just fun

  5. Phil,
I believe that poker WAS bad for me in my adolescence, but things can change. You have to truly evaluate your life and build your life up correctly to be successful in poker. Some of us “long-term winners” have it harder than others. I hope somebody out there reads this and finds the champion in themselves. It has very little to do with what you do AT the table, as opposed to what you do away from the table. Taking a break from poker is something I NEEDED to do… to become the best version of myself… to figure out how to handle the swings. Trust me, if you’re going through hard times in poker… you can do it! Just believe and act accordingly for your own specific, unique, God-given situation.

  6. I’ve been grinding online for the past 4-5 years, living off it. Not making a killing , just getting by. I got a real job and my stress levels came way down. I look 10 years younger, no bs. And I just had my first 3some of my life @ 38 years old lol.

  7. "When your life has become unmanageable" from slot machines, online poker, X-Box, video games, drinking, eating, drugs, etc. — and other compulsions, that's when you enter a 12-step program.

  8. I just play poker without real money usually just Monopoly money its fun with friends
