Poker Strategy: Running into Top Pair on River

Poker Strategy Info And Source:

Bart Hanson from Crush Live Poker talks poker strategy of running into top pair.

In this hand the caller correctly structures his cbet with a back door nut flush draw. He picks up that equity on the turn, barrels for a second time and is called and runs in to top pair on the river. Bart discusses river value bet sizing.

  1. Very clear, concise thinking caller; props to him. I agree AJ is a clear bet and I have been called by lots of 9Q of hearts etc who are too pissed hearts missed and want you to be bluffing too. @Bart would you riv bet 1/3rd with KQ too? What about low AX of of hearts?

  2. I'm 5:45 in, to me the villains hand really feels like a slow played k9 or 7 9 suited, based on action and just calling on the flop. I guess he could have pocket 9s 2s or 7s but I think he raises those especially ducks. Most players would have raised on the flop or river but just calling the 180 on the turn feels like two pair or 9 10 of hearts. If it was me in that moment I would have bet around three hundred on the river and fold to a raise. He's never raising pair plus missed flush draw or even a king, I have no reason other than it just feels like a trap for thinking this way. Let's see what happens. I would be so bummed if he raised on the river with a weak ace and I folded.

  3. What was he thinking betting pot on the river??? He's only getting called by a better hand, I love playing people like this caller, that was such a bad bet. I would never check the river but betting that much is ridiculous, unless he has a set ak or nothing.

  4. Not sure villain "has to snap call" pot sized bet on this river. I'd probably call a lot against most players here with 9-7, but I'm not loving it.

  5. turn bet was small, you see higher stake like triton poker, they almost POT size bet every street. I'd prefer a pot size bet with NFD and plan to check on river if missed.
