Its better to have maniacs to your left as you have position on the player when they raise as the rest of the table will act before you.  I learned this playing NL1000 and having position on the maniac.  I limp AK in 1st pos'n and the BB raises it 18x the blind and I go all-in.  Button calls for 1k and the button had AA and the BB had JT.  Had he has pos'n on me I could have only lost 1BB rather than 100BB because I would have had warning signs to get out.
