Poker Strategy: Should We Just Call The River With A Boat?

  1. how low of an 8 would he really call with ? 8 combos of each offsuit non-boat combo he overcalls the straddle with and calls a river raise with may not me more than the boat (and quad) combos he has which definetly includes all boats except AA and 22. maybe not such a bad call after all?

  2. I like Heros decision to just call the turn. If he raise the turn after checking back the flop, his hand already look a lot like a boat, because he would never take that line with an ace or with trips. So I think, more mistakes happen from all 3 opponents by not springing the trap until the river.

And of course this is a pretty extreme way ahead way behind situation with so many hands drawing completely or near dead against Hero, that there is little value in raising "for protection". On the contrary it would be a disaster to have someone fold a draw, which could catch up and pay off on the river.

On the river however Hero have to go for it. Just calling here is simply to nitty, its to much "monsters under the bed" syndrom, and its leaving a ton of money on the table.

  3. I don't know why the turn is even debated…It's always a flat here with 2 players to act behind. If we raise, we always have a boat or quads and nothing else. Being in position against the straddle betting into us is a dream and we can almost always get it in by the river if villain bets again. (which he did) We don't even need to go into how bad just flatting river is. Villan has every combo of an 8 here being in the straddle (as Bart mentioned)..Clear cut jam.

  4. Hey Bart, would you consider betting this hand as a bluff on the flop? I think it's one of the better bluffing candidates in addition to some flush draws and maybe 109s. We block some of the 78 suited combos. Additionally, we're going to have a lot of hands we want to bet for Value on the flop (AA,AJ+,88, 89s) so it could be nice to work in some bluffs.

  5. I think you could absolutely check back and call turn with our good aces. Because why c-bet into this many people all of whom have more 8s than us.
