What Is A Float In Poker? | Float Play Poker Strategy

Poker Strategy Info And Source:

You wanna float? Cool, but you best be prepared, and you best throw Ego out the door.

Before getting to the meaning of Floating and Float Play Strategy, you should first know that based on what I have witnessed throughout my poker travels and experiences is that most people who try to float do it incorrectly and lose money.

On the other hand, it can be a valuable weapon. I’ll simplify it for you.
When you float, it means you’re calling the flop with a weak hand because you think your opponent is weak and you plan on bluffing on the turn or river to win the hand.

By floating, it makes your opponent believe you have a hand, which might slow him down.

We can go down many different roads here and complicate things, but I’m not going to do that. I don’t care what anybody says: You win when you keep the game simple.

Here are the rules to successful Float Play Strategy.

One, you should only float when heads-up. This will greatly increase your success rate. DO NOT attempt to float in multi-way pots.

Two, you should only attempt this against an aggressive player who likes to c-bet often. Some poker players try to float against tight players, but that is ludicrous and negative EV. A tight player isn’t going to fire at you unless they hit the flop. If you float in these spots, you have let Ego in the door and you’re going to lose money.

Three, and this one might surprise you, is that some poker strategists believe you should only float if your hand has some kind of potential. I disagree. If you’re playing against an AGGRO player who almost always c-bets, then you’re playing the player, not the cards.

Here’s the betting pattern.

If he bets the flop, you call, and he checks the turn, fire every single time!

If he bets the flop, you call, and he still bets the turn, fold.

Like I said, you win by keeping the game simple.
