What’s a Straddle in Poker? | Straddle Poker Strategy

Poker Strategy Info And Source:

Put simply, a Straddle Bet is an optional blind bet that can only be used in cash games. You cannot straddle in a Texas hold’em poker tournament.

There are different kinds of straddles, but the most common is a blind bet that is twice the size of the Big Blind and must be implemented in the Under the Gun position.

The rules vary on straddle bets from poker room to poker room. In some poker rooms, you can Button Straddle, which means you can place your blind bet from the Button. In other rooms, you can Mississippi Straddle, which means you can straddle from anywhere on the table other than the blinds. And in some poker rooms, you can straddle for more than 2x the Big Blind.

Regardless of the straddle, you must always place your straddle bet before receiving your cards. Aggressive players like to straddle more than tight players. However, tight players might also straddle if they’re stuck.

Personally, I almost never straddle. It’s not a profitable poker play.
If you straddle from Under the Gun, you’re increasing risk when out of position. If you straddle from the Button, you’re taking a no-risk advantageous situation and adding risk. This can be profitable if you’re running good, but you’re usually not going to run good. Those are special days.

If you want my honest opinion, don’t straddle unless desperate when stuck in order to build the pot. Straddling is not a road you usually want to travel.
