Are Poker Workbooks Too Tough?

Poker Tips Video Source & Information:

Are #poker workbooks too hard? What are you really supposed to learn from a workbook? Are workbooks the right learning tool for every player?

In this video, I reply to an email sent in by Derek, who said:

“Good evening James,

Some time ago I ordered your pre and post-flop workbooks but feel a bit intimidated by them not because you aren’t great at explaining things, which you obviously have a gift for, but just because the raw complexity, especially related to being able to internalize how often an opponent’s range hits a flop type, feels hard for me to operationalize at the table.

I’d like to get to the point where I can make confident decisions using the material from the pre and post-flop workbooks but they feel overly complex to me for now and I admit it may just be an issue of not having the raw intelligence to utilize them. I’m unfortunately an anxious type of person and the complexity can lead to a low-grade panic that makes it hard to think clearly. Are there any other resources you might recommend?

I only play live poker as the skill-level online is too tough for me. My MO for live games is that of a “tagfish” with an emphasis on tightness as that’s where I feel “safe.” Your books have helped me to bluff scare cards when it seems logical and that’s been a lot of fun and new for me.

As an aside, I’d like to just compliment you on your overall demeanor and way of looking at things as I find your calmness and determination to use logic very inspiring even outside of poker.”

  1. I just bought your Math & Preflop workbook and I love it. I will be getting your postflop workbook and 6max cash books next.

I hope they are tough it means when I work through it I will be better off. If they are too easy there is no value as we will finish them in a day or two.

I love studying poker and using your book for 1-2 problems per day.

Would love a follow up workbook for the extraneous aspects of poker- journaling, goal setting, building a warm up routine, the mental game of managing sessions, downswings, upswings, building study habits, tools and resources etc

  2. I really enjoy the information and approach to learning, but the background music is a big distraction. The style of music is not conducive to to the rhythm if speech, and it drowns over the softness of his voice.

  3. Hi, like your videos. I’m new at poker and am looking for a good beginner book to start studying poker do you have one or could you recommend one. Thanks Mark

  4. Great video! I bought the preflop and post flop workbooks as well as the GTO book but I have been procrastinating/intimidated by the material. Instead I find myself rereading other books that I find less intimidating. Time to get to work. Thank you for the pep talk.

  5. I was interested in the poker workbooks (active learning is the best) until i read somewhere that the author quit playing serious poker over a decade ago.

  6. I would only invest in poker workbooks I wanted to move up in stakes however I only play in small stakes tourneys so ABC poker works perfectly for me.

  7. If you are still working on learning poker fundamentals, I highly suggest starting with my Preflop & Math Workbook first: https://www.splitsuit.com/poker-preflop-math-workbook
