Remember not to let the minor EV gained from playing certain hands affect your overall poker strategy.

Adjusting your poker strategy in a major way to try to win a very rare poker promotion is likely to have a negative effect on your overall win-rate.

You’re just not going to win the bad beat jackpot often enough to recover the EV that you sacrifice by playing backdoor straight flush draws and backdoor quad draws.

If you DON’T adjust your poker strategy AT ALL you will likely be completely fine and will likely have an edge over those players who adjust to chase those backdoor royal flush draws.

If you’re building huge chip stacks already but still looking for how to improve at Pot Limit Omaha, No Limit Hold ‘em, or big bet poker in general, Phil Galfond is here to teach you how to think like a professional poker player.

Are you a new poker player or a poker beginner? Do you just need the best Texas Hold’em poker strategy and best Pot Limit Omaha poker tips, or do you have a high stakes poker related question you’d like a poker professional’s advice on?

Leave a comment and your question might end up in the next one of Phil’s quick poker tips videos!

  1. An example of adjusting to a BBJ would be something like an AAA22 board where you have 22, and the opponent shoves for say 2x pot, where he is clearly repping quads. With a jackpot running, you never fold the lower quads, which you might wanna in normal situations given certain context of the player.

  2. PHIL. In our casino a high hand Jackpot of A's full or greater pays $400. Since it's a $1-3 game this amount is significantly greater than any normal big pot of $100-$150. So I think in this case it not too bad to alter strategy.(as long as you are 'careful')….😮

  3. They should not be called "Bad Beat Jackpots". They should be called "Cooler Jackpots". If board is AAKK2 and you lose with KK to AA, you did not get bad beat. Credible poker rooms should at least get basic poker nomenclature correct.

  4. This happened at playground poker club here in montreal canada. The bad beat was close to 2.5 M and people were actually changing the way they played to have a chance to win it. It was crazy, people were getting pissed if you played actual poker….

  5. I did it once, 1-1. Flop is QQ3, I have pocket 3s. He bets, I raise, he shoves. I have 150 behind, I am 100% sure he has QQ from physical tells.

I worked out my equity for the BBJ was over 200 with the one outer, so called. Didn't hit.
