As Phil says in today’s poker tip video, if the answer isn’t ‘get better’ then there is usually one primary reason you aren’t either making a deep run or making the final table with a big chip stack and winning occasionally: you aren’t playing loose and aggressive enough when the blinds and antes get larger.

It can be uncomfortable for new poker players to use their big chip stack aggressively if they’re lucky enough to be the chipleader with 12 players left.

Maintaining that lead going into 9 or 6 players left requires you to apply pressure and leverage your large chip stack as a weapon as opposed to protection.

Being a loose aggressive poker player when you have the ability has huge positive variance associated with it.

Of course, sometimes you’ll be risking your chips in a spot that feels very uncomfortable but you’re also putting your opponents in that same uncomfortable spot!

You can always ‘just get better’ by getting poker coaching or using a poker training site like Run it Once (owned by Phil Galfond!). Whether it’s Run it Once or another site, there are plenty of poker courses or poker training content that explore how to run deep in online poker tournaments and how to run deep in live poker tournaments. Beginner poker players and elite poker pros alike can all learn something from high quality poker training material.

If you’re building huge chip stacks already but still looking for how to improve at pot limit omaha, no limit hold ‘em, or poker in general, Phil Galfond is here to teach you how to think like a professional poker player.

  1. I like this advice. It’s also tough to run deep in large fields I only play on Sundays when most my entries are fields of 3,000+ players and you have to get really lucky to cash those because there are several flips and have to hold on several all ins to make the money

  2. Instructions unclear; open ripped 150bb with 85o (you DID SAY to “be aggressive”, PHILLIP!) and somehow still lost 😞
