Play money or fake money poker games can be an okay way to learn things like the rules of poker and the hand rankings in poker (which hand beats which) but this playing environment will not be good for learning to play poker well.

If you want to learn how to play poker well you need you play in an environment where stakes are involved so that nonsense play is minimized.

In a play money poker environment, like Zynga Poker or the play money section of your favourite real money poker site, there is nothing other than waiting for free chips stopping someone from shoving in any two cards.

  1. Best option for those of us living (let's New York) in states that don't allow us to play real money; aside from going casinos?

  2. Play money cash games are a waste of time. Play money tournaments are beneficial for beginners (they were for me). The people messing around get eliminated pretty fast and you're left with people taking it seriously. It taught me enough to beat my drunk friends at poker almost every time we played at least. It helps you learn the basics before you play for real money. I worked my way up from play money games, through the microstakes and now I play $50 & $100 buy-ins online. 🙂

  3. Love the content Phil keep it coming! Can you do a video about jumping up in stakes? Will I learn from playing with better players? Cost benefit analysis and bankroll management when I take a shot.

  4. There used to be "big buy-in" play money SNGs at pokerstars ~12 years ago. People could reload 1k or 10k per day. But the buy-ins for these SNG were 1 million and more. Many people were actually playing more seriously than in the micro stake tournaments, at least those who had to win their chips and who weren't buying them.
I played these play money SNGs every now and then and sold the play money on Ebay and such. Players could transfer play money to each other. And then, Pokerstars found out about it, and blocked the play money transfers and started selling play money themselves. Bummer, the 1 million play chip SNGs were basically rake free 1$ SNGs.
