You might start playing poker part time and be making $15 / hour in your given game and think it’s time to quit your job to go pro, your winnings and maybe even your win rate can only go up if you play more hours right?

You need to remember to consider some key poker concepts however, variance being prime among them.

Normal poker variance is going to crush you if you don’t have a proper bankroll and separate roll of money to support your life, yeah right now you are making $15 / hour over this sample of hands but what about next month when you make $0 / hour, or -$15 / hour?

Do you think your poker play and adherence to poker strategy is going to stay solid while you’re going through a downswing?

Some people might have this ability, most people don’t!

It’s completely normal to feel tilt from losing tons and it’s even more normal to feel tilt when you’re losing tons and also have to rely on your poker winnings to live.

Be conservative with your estimates and take the variance that comes with poker seriously!

  1. Its $16.7 per hour not 67. Id assume thats what he meant to say and the mistake went unnoticed by whoever edits his videos

  2. Blackrain79 has some insane results in micro stakes but I don't think too many ppl can make a living playing micros. Maybe if you live in a super cheap country and multitable zoom with a crushing winrate.

  3. One of phils rare mistakes;)

Anyway, I think most live games are incredibly soft, and if you are really good, you should get to 20bb/100 or even more
Still, 30 hands/hour would be a lot on most tables.

So best case scenario, you are crushing and make 20bb/100 =100 dollar/100 hands on 2/5.
To make, say, 3k a month, you would need to play 3k hands. Equals 100 hours. Equals 25 hours of poker every week. Maybe 5 times 5 hour sessions or 3 times 8 hour sessions EVERY WEEK. And that is best case scenario for an excellent player.

Conclusion: beware what you wish for. I did play professionally myself for a few years btw, nothing like phil obv, but it was decent earnings. Math models like this made me stick to online play. You really need to be careful if you want to go pro.

  4. I broke my brain with his 67 per hour bit. I was convinced I was dumb, like od course he must be correct and I just cant math.
until I came to the comments. HOW was he wrong. Basic math bru.
