How To Play Pai Gow Poker
Pai Gow Poker is one of the more interesting games that you’ll encounter at a casino. Due to increase of Asian gamblers to places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City, more casinos have begun to offer Pai Gow Poker, a game that was usually only found in casinos around Asia. If you happen to come across a table in a casino somewhere, you should know how to play because Pai Gow Poker is one of the simplest, yet most enjoyable casino games there is.
The Basics
Like most varieties of casino poker, Pai Gow is not played against the people at your table, but against the dealer himself. A game will begin with the placing of the bets after which, the dealer will deal 7 cards to you and 7 cards to himself. Of those 7 cards, you will need to make the best possible two hands. The first hand, made up of 5 cards, also known as the “high hand”, must always outrank the second hand, also known as the “low hand”, made up of the two cards. If you fail to organize your cards properly, it is known as fouling your hand and you will lose all your bets.
The Hands
Pai Gow Poker sticks to guidelines of other poker hands, which are ranked as follows:
– Straight Flush: J, 10, 9, 8, 7 of the same suit
– Four of a Kind: 7, 7, 7, 7
– Full House (Three of kind and a pair combined): 7, 7, 7 + 4, 4
– Flush (Any five cards of the same suit): A, J, 7, 5, 2
– Straight: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 (different suits)
– Three of a Kind: 4, 4, 4
– Two Pair: 7, 7 + 4, 4
– One Pair: 7, 7
– High Card (Any card in the hand that is the highest): A, K, Q, J, 10
One rule that’s unique to Pai Gow Poker is the Joker Card which can be dealt and can either be used to complete a straight or a flush, or can be used as an Ace.
Playing The Game
Before you attempt to play Online Pai Gow Poker, you will need to make sure that you have a basic knowledge of poker hands. But, if you’re a beginner and playing at a casino as opposed to playing online, you can simply ask the dealer to arrange the cards in the optimal position for you. After all, there is very little skill involved when playing Pai Gow and most of it is down to luck.
