Pai Gow Strategy
Learning Pai Gow strategy has a lot to do with knowing how to play the game, knowing the hand rankings and knowing when to split pairs, which is by far the most difficult decision you’ll have to make when playing. That being said, there is one strategy that you cannot afford to ignore: When you’re playing, NEVER bet the bonus. This is because the house edge is enormous and the chances of winning are very slim, similar to what it is when playing Blackjack and paying for insurance.
Splitting the Pairs
Below are the basic rules you can follow when setting your hand in Pai Gow and are the same ones used by most of the casinos that offer the game. Firstly, if you have a completely unconnected hand, you should play your highest card in the high hand and your second two highest cards in the low hand (if you want to learn the basics of Pai Gow Poker, you’ll need to watch our How to Play Pai Gow Poker Video).
Now, the tricky part, knowing when to split pairs is one of the most useful tips we you can use when playing Pai Gow. Firstly, you will need to know the different ranking of pairs, they are:
– Low Pairs (2 to 6)
– Medium Pairs (7 to 10)
– High Pairs (Jack to Ace)
You should always split the following pairs: two pairs of Aces, two high pairs, one high pair and one medium pair unless there is an Ace in the hand, two medium pairs and, unless you have an Ace or a King, you should always split one low pair and one medium pair or two low pairs. Next, you should always play three-of-a-kind in your high hand unless you have three Aces. If you have a full house, you should always play the pair in your low hand and the three-of-a-kind in your high hand.
Simple Strategies Work
Pai Gow is one of those games that relies heavily on luck and while you can use these simple strategies to slightly alter the odds, you’ll never be able to fully control the game. If you want more in-depth strategies, watch the full video, otherwise, just enjoy yourself, Pai Gow is one of the most enjoyable casino games in the world.

  1. “Never bet the bonus…”. Then you might as well not play since you are disadvantaged anyway in any casino games.

  2. 00:42 – every hand I ever get when the big bucks are out there. Go figure, RFID/Shufflemaster

  3. I was betting the bonus all night and didn't hit bad other than a couple trips and flushes. I was low on funds and stop betting the bonus. Two hands in and I hit the motherloveing 5 aces with no bonus bet out.
