Poker mega star Tom Dwan met up with Paul Phua in a casino in the Philippines recently to play at a tournament in aid of a cancer charity in the country. They managed to find some time though to have a chat for the Paul Phua Poker Website. Watch their conversation on “trapping”, and whether beginners do it enough, or too much.
Conversation soon drifted onto another topic though. The subject of generalisations, and whether they are ever accurate around the poker table. We are always told never to judge a book by its cover, or to make assumptions about what someone is like based on their age, their nationality, the job they do etc. However it’s sometimes fun to try!
Can you, in fact, make generalisations about an opponent’s style of play based on the country they come from? Does a player from Germany for example play in one way, and a player from China play in another? Are German players in fact better than Chinese players?! A controversial thought – but not one that Paul and Tom shy away from addressing! What about someone’s job? Does a person who works in the field of finance play in a different way to someone who works in another profession (you’d think they would be more comfortable around large amounts of money perhaps than people from lots of other walks of life!). And how relevant is someone’s age? You might think that an older person would be less likely to bluff than a younger person – given that younger people have a reputation for being more comfortable with taking on risk. (Interesting though that Paul started to bluff a lot more after he had been playing Texas Holdem for a few years https://youtu.be/x9ukeTuQO0o
Paul and Tom address all these topics in this video, the second in our series where Paul is “in conversation” with many of the world’s best known poker professionals.
By the way if you are a beginner starting out in the world of Texas Holdem poker, you should check out all the tutorial videos in Paul Phua’s poker school (https://www.paulphuapoker.com/paul-phua-blog/poker-tips/). 2. There is a saying from chinese poker beginner player, it goes like this, “how can you know your card is bad if you didn’t see the flop” LMAO
