When to Chop The Blinds in Live Poker

Texas Holdem Tips Video Source & Information:

If you play low stakes live poker (home game or casino) you will inevitably get asked to ‘chop’ the blinds, but should you? Let’s discuss the strategy of chopping the blinds.

Some players develop a strategy of only chopping if the player on the other side of them would also chop to keep things ‘even’.

The truth is that if you think you have a skill edge on your opponents you should decline the chop, especially if you know that you have a skill edge post flop.

These blind vs blind situations are one of the situations where skilled players can win tons of big blinds from unskilled players, when ranges are wide there are more opportunities to outplay your opponent.

Another thing to remember is that playing low stakes live poker can get kind of boring at a full-ring (9-handed) poker table, if it’s folded to you in the blinds it’s a good opportunity to play a hand and get frisky!

If you’re building huge chip stacks already but still looking for how to improve at Pot Limit Omaha, No Limit Hold ‘em, or big bet poker in general, Phil Galfond is here to teach you how to think like a professional poker player.

  1. Many casinos and rooms i play in you would be looked at very badly. If you dont play the same rooms alot sure but if your a regular and no one really talks to you then , its demoralizing

  2. What and how should you say you don’t want to chop? This also happens at my local charitable games, there will be a 200$ tournament 3tables and when it gets to the final 3 people, everyone always chops, blinds are super high by then, but I still like to play it out, any advice about what to do/say in both situations? Thank you.

  3. This is some pettiness bro. Yeah technically there's some money to be made in these situations, but it's just a classless way of going about it.

  4. Hang on a minute wtf is chopping the blinds? What does that mean? Someone even mentioned doing it in a tournament, surely that would ruin the game though?

    Rake isn't as ridiculous where I've played and I don't think it's a thing

  5. Huh? We only chop because the rake is over 100bbs per 100 here in California

Of course we would love to play it, but we simply cannot

  6. I can get behind this in time raked games, but in normal raked games which is way more common it’s hard to say what’s better for a good player. The problem for me is the amount of time that gets used in the often small BvB high raked pots… time that could be used playing normal multi-way pots with the recs that are giving away money in much larger ways than BvB will offer (for the most part)… remember, you only get so much time with each rec after all.
