The game is a variant of the popular American Style Blackjack, also known as 21 (Twenty-One). Pontoon, albeit being quite rare nowadays, is still popular in some countries around the world especially, of course, Britain.

This is what I played with my great uncle who fought in WW2. When I was a kid we played this all the time but we called it 21's. He must have played a heck ton because he always won no matter what. I came to this just to remember how to play the game from my childhood.
Pontoon is an old soldier's game across Europe. Everyone was playing it in WWII from France to the Soviet Union.
