In this video I outline why short stacking is a great option for learning poker.

-Intro to Short Stacking- Discuss merits of short stacking
1. Main reason is simplified decision making process. Poker is a game of small edges. Playing a short stack makes it easy to apply those small edges through superior fundamentals and to avoid complicated high variance deep stacked play, especially post-flop. Post-flop is much more cut and dried as a short stack. Commitment thresholds are easier to obtain with a variety of hands.
2. Less money to risk- Less money needed to play each stake, leads to quicker ascent through the stakes.
3. Cooler proof- less swings, lead to more confident play and steadier win-rate. Short stacking neuters anyone trying to flat call pre-flop to nut camp or outplay a skilled short stacker after the flop. Both are futile when the short stacker applies simple fundamental hand and board texture reading tactics that are easily applicable by anyone willing to take the time to learn them. These are just a few major reasons short stacking is a great way to learn the game of poker. My book, Automatic Poker, teaches you everything you need to get started and most of all, shows you how to learn and improve on your on.
4. If you are going for Supernova Elite or some other challenge, then CAP games offer you the chance to increase your hands per hour, and as a result, potentially your hourly rate. My short stacking strategy can easily be adapted to 20bb games, 30bb games, or 40bb games.

Myths
-About 3-bet shoving- While never having to play 3-bet pots post-flop certainly simplifies things, a short stacker generally does no more 3-betting, and sometimes a lot less than many of the other regulars.
-Short stacking cheating- Short stacking is just another strategy. Short stackers play by the same rules as everyone else and there is not inherent edge to be found by short stacking, except that a lot of players do not understand it is a different strategy and fail to adjust. Short stackers take the time to learn how to exploit full stackers, why can’t full stackers take the time to learn how to exploit a short stacker?
-Relies on charts- While it is easier to lay out a basic strategy via charts, and my book does so, they are only designed as a guide to get someone started. Once someone has the strategy down, the charts can be thrown away as a player learns to adjust to table dynamics rather than perform a static style of play.
-In some ways, short stacking takes more skill than “full stacking” does. You have to have a keen understanding of the math of various stack sizes for both pre-flop and post-flop play. It’s much easier to learn how to play a stack that is constantly topped off then it is to have to adjust to constantly varying stack sizes. A short stacker may see his stack fluctuate anywhere from 30 big blinds, down to 5 big blinds, and up to 50 big blinds and needs to know how to play all of those stack sizes in both a strategical and tactical sense

  1. Big stacks hate it because they fall victim to the trap. Their ego makes them believe they are bullying the small stack. When in reality a short stack is playing a more disciplined tight game.

  2. I advice anybody to buy his book if you're interested in short stacking cash game, really interesting.
