There are two points to address when you have just lost a huge pot, your potential tilt and how your opponents may adjust.

You may not even think that you are tilting when you lose a giant pot. You might worry that you’re going to miss all of the action.

It really sucks to lose a big poker pot, you just might be a super GTO robot but isn’t it better to take a quick break to check as opposed to continuing to play in a potentially heightened emotional moment?

The game will still be there when you get back from a 3-10 minute break.
Once you’ve accepted the variance and are back from your break, you now have to be aware of how your opponents can adjust to you.

Some players will see you having lost a huge pot and think you’re tilting or that you’re trying to get your chips back fast so they’d be likely to call more, be careful putting money in with weak holdings vs these players.
Some players will think that you are going to play scared and that you’re going to be easy to run over so they begin bluffing you more often.

Either way there’s a pretty simple way to counter, tighten up a little preflop! This also can give you a little bit of a break as you are playing less hands while playing stronger ones.

If you’re building huge chip stacks already but still looking for how to improve at pot limit omaha, no limit hold ‘em, or poker in general, Phil Galfond is here to teach you how to think like a professional poker player.

  1. Love the content Phil! What if I lose a big pot late in a tournament after building my stack all day?

  2. I rarely get tilt, but even when I do loose a big bought I take a walk jusy as a reset. And I agree tighten up for a bid and it often can lead to a windfall as people target you if they believe your on tilt.

  3. Wish I’d seen this 20 minutes ago after I lost my way, late on a tournament final table. Such is life, it’s only money.

  4. I lost a 3k pot today with ace king on a KQ5 rainbow flop it was a 4-bet pot we got it in on the flop he had K7 and hit a 7 on the turn. Painful stuff man as my bankroll dwindles I needed that pot not sure how to recover any advice would be appreciated.
