Online Poker Strategy: How To Play Trips.

Poker Strategy Info And Source:

Last #HelloAlec for this week is coming from my reader Cesar. He played this micro stakes hand online with ace jack off in the big blind. He flopped the trips, and then shoves on the river. What would you do in his shoes? Your analysis?

  1. Bigger bet on the turn maybe… On the river… After the previus play… Yea, ALL IN.

  2. I think you did everything right that you possibly could have. You just got unlucky.

  3. I think the hand was well played. Nothing you can do about the end result. Villain showed commitment to the pot early on and with an SPR of 1 even if a yugioh card came out on the turn Villain was not abandoning this hand. Good luck moving forward.

  4. That's a bad beat, you will never get him off kings in those small stakes, you played the hand well but not sure about the shove on the river though? What are you getting called by except the nuts? Having said that though in those stakes people do often call with any two cards so not the worst move. Just the way it goes sometimes.

  5. Dear Cesar,

Let me start by saying, You were unlucky this hand.

But there are some notes that you can take from this.

I like your flop big raise and sizing not too much not too little. The negative is that he is not going to continue in many turns unless he improves because you raise big and on the turn he has to put at least half his stack in. But you always get value on the flop when he has a draw or an overpair or A6. If he has a J of course you bust him. So by raising big on the flop you ensure that you will get value from trips. On the turn people that have programs like holdem manager and play regularly and are profitable they will lay down most of their calling range on the turn. If they have noted you as a profitable regular. If not they wont fold most of their range. Because as you said you are not the only one grinding and because grinders have the exact same ABC style your hand is pretty face upon the turn. Like if someone can't lay down an over-pair on the flop he will on the turn because you will never bluff that spot after a call. Plus on the turn most of the flush draws villain has have to fold except the Nut flush draw that also has a pair now.

On the flop I put him on {AA,KK, KsQs, QQ,1010,99} on the turn {AA,KK,KsQs} and when he called you all-in KK. Let me explain why. From my experience grinding the lowest cash games online people who usually are profitable regulars and multi-table like 12+ tables play ABC and do not deviate from that strategy.

When you raise on the flop he doesn't call with air so he must have something.
You got the As and the board is paired on the turn he is getting a 3:1 if he had a small flush he would fold the hand except KQs or K10s you hand is also face-up trips if you are a Reg. So if you shove the river he might fold KQs. I don't know if he would fold AA.

In my mind you have to shove the river and pray he calls with one pair. You should never check the river because if he shoves you have to call and if you check he checks back. Even though you read he might has KK

I mean that is why I stopped grinding these low stakes too many times when people bet the river have the NUTS or when just call with Second Nuts it is too tight and too difficult to just win 10bbs per hour is like 10*0.02 = 20 cents! haha bust you balls for 20 cents damn!

My advice is that the internet multi-tabling low stakes although is a great way to get a feeling for the game, run a lot of hands, learn the game without much risk, also your eye will start analyzing boards quickly, you will get more familiar with math and betting sizes and good at multitasking. The cons are that there is no money involved and you shouldnt take it too far like more than a couple of months. Start playing bigger online or stop cash games play tournaments. Better to start playing some live poker to finance your online game.Playing live cash is easier than online with the experience you have at these stakes you will be a winning player in low stakes live but you will need some money if you happen to be at the low end of the variance. One time I played live I turned my last money120 to 1500 in a week so it can happen but you can lose it as well. I suggest you go try play for bigger money after you learn the game.

    Thanks

    A

  6. You did great, and did in my opinion not do anything wrong. All bets/raises are in my opinion perfect. Your betsizing on the turn is my opinion very very good, because you don't want to scare a flush-draw away with a pot-sized bet, since you're a 4/1 favorite against that after the turn. Very nice play, very unlucky on the turn, but that's poker 🙂

  7. As others have said, you were playing for 2 $ here, so frankly who cares? However the same theory apply regardless of stakes, only ranges and skill levels change. So if you really want to analyse the hand, your line was totally fine. Certainly at this stakes, and even at higher stakes, nobody is folding a J on this texture like ever. So its totally reasonable to go for full value against the last remaining J in the deck, if he have that hand. And at this stakes in particular maybe he could also have AA or AK and call it off. Or just be a non-believer or feeling bored and call off with something completely silly like 77-TT. So you get plenly of value from worse hands to compensate for the few times, you are behind. Unless he is completely spewy and call preflop with J6 or J4, there are only 9 combos of boats, he can have. And if he can have those hands, he can have any J, which just pushes the odds even more into your favour.
