On Location Fashion Photography at the Baccarat Hotel

If you’re familiar with my work you know that I mostly shoot in the studio — not only because I love studio lighting but also because sometimes the conditions on the East Coast aren’t always as favorable!

Over the winter I was invited to photograph at the Baccarat hotel for a joint collaboration between the hotel and fashion designer, The Danes.

The challenge was to create images that satisfy both clients — so I had to focus on the dress as well as bring attention to the space.

Another challenge to on location photography is that you sometimes have to move quickly, like very quickly. Since where we were photographing the model was an active bar/restaurant I had to get the lighting setup and everything ready to go before the model even stepped into frame.

For this shoot I used 3 strobes, but you could get away with less. Each light has its purpose so that’s the fun challenge when you do on location photography, you will have to adapt to the situation.

The main light on the subject was an Optical Spot which was used to create contrast and pop the subject out of the background a bit. You don’t have to use a hard light modifier for something like this, but I decided to just because of the quality of light it produces and wanted a bit of “old hollywood” vibe.

Then, lights 2 and 3 were both bare bulb strobes with CTO gels which helped warm up the entire space and act as a rim and hair light on the subject so they wouldn’t blend into the background as much.

There was also a window behind me which was providing indirect light with a “cool” tone that helped balance things out.

Ultimately, I tried to take some of the color that was already in the scene and enhance it with the strobes.

In post production I color graded the image to give it more of a cinematic look and removed some of the unwanted elements in the scene.

You can see how all of the elements come together, the lighting, environment, camera settings, color grading and retouch.

  1. Love this. I created something similar in a hotel with just my A1's. Had only minutes to get the shot.

  2. I’d never thought of using using the blue outside light as shadow fill – awesome!

  3. You are too good Lindsay, I thought the 2 strobes in the back were actual lights of the hotel bar area. Well done

  4. Stunning image 👍👏. Beautiful model, amazing location and a photographer that’s super creative. Using the flashes basically as room lights is just genius, and I love the colour grading and the Hollywood like look it gives the image.

  5. Your work remains inspirational, Lindsay. Thank you for what you and your team do. I'm considering getting your optical spot; which focal length lens did you use on the modifier for this image?

  6. Fantastic image and even more amazing given the working constraints you had to work within. Nailed it again!
