Poker tournaments or poker cash games? It is a question that is regularly asked by poker players and in this poker video Jonathan will help you answer that question to find the right poker game for you!
Unless you are a world class poker player or a poker player with a lot of time to devote to studying you should specialize in either poker tournaments or poker cash games and hone your poker study to just one of those formats. This will give you more of an edge in games where you are playing against players that might not be studying as much as you are.
You should always ask yourself what you want from poker to help you decide which type to play. Do you want the fame and glory? Well, poker tournaments at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) would be your path. Do you just want to make a consistent steady side income? Poker cash games would be your route.
In cash games there is generally way less variance as a good winning cash game poker player will often win 60% of their sessions. A tournament poker player will only finish in the money approximately 15-20% of the time. For this reason you should always keep a larger bankroll for poker tournaments as the variance will be much higher than poker cash games.

What do you prefer playing – tournaments or cash games? 🤔
I used to primarily do cash games. But I've started getting more into tournaments. The constraints mentioned remained but if I have the time to sit down and play for a 7 hour tournament I love it. Watching your videos I've been doing pretty well!
I started playing tournaments more. I didn't have a "bankroll". I played out of my entertainment budget. I could go spend $140 entry and play for the night. But cash was "intimidating". I could lose my $300 but in a few times (sometimes quickly) and that was no fun. Over the years, I've gotten good enough to win at 1/3 pretty consistently. And, by years end, I'm up on tournaments. I track it all now w an app. I've decided to focus on tournaments because I don't have access to beatable 2/5 or bigger games. But I can play very beatable tournaments on my phone every night. Very helpful video JL. Thank you as always for your advice.
Tournaments are frankly much more fun, but I chose to play almost only cash for a lot of reasons you said (not much time, don't want to study too many different spots, hate huge variance)
does this mean tournaments are the better option for beginners because it's April Fools'?!
Don't forget the very casual players. A small tourney is capped at 100 bucks and so it may be a good start (you only loose a specific amount). Thanks for the video, really appreciate the short format.
I play both cash and tournaments I usually fund my tournament by answer my cash wins and then slowly increase my bankroll with my tournament winnings and my cash that's what I do all the time online.
I love them both, but if I have the time I play tournaments. I started out in tournaments, but now that I have a full time job, kids, and go to school full time, I've been alienated mostly to cash. Either way, I'm happy!
Tournaments seem more social to me. Cash games often have a bunch of people with headphones on watching a movie on their phone…..lol. People tend to chat more in tournaments. It is a lot easier to have a good day at cash than it is to have a good day in a tournament. You have the option to quit or play as long as you like in cash, enabling you to walk out a winner. In tournaments, you are in for the long hall….one lapse in judgement can cripple you with no reload and maybe no rebuy if it is later in the game. While both play the same game, the strategies for play can be very different. Play a tournament like a cash game and your bluffs will land you in a hole. OMC is going to call you down and take your stack when you can't reload……lol
I think tournaments are more fun. Tournaments are more complex as far as strategy and bad players mistakes are magnified. If I make a big bet or lose a big pot it doesn't feel as bad because it doesn't feel like I'm losing real money (even though technically you are), while in a cash game if I'm down a few buyins I just feel sick.
