Pocket Kings Strategy (Online Cash Game)! Villain’s Bluff Or Not?

  1. The betting line looks like made hand. Since this is the micro's min raise means monster. The river action looks like a value bet that is sized for you to call. I would expect a better player to over bet the turn if he had AhXh. He still might have that hand if it's specifically Ah8x. Like the laydown.

  2. I think he hit a straight on the turn or maybe he flopped a small flush. Only a very sophisticated player would min raise turn with off suit Ah x hand. Good fold Matheus.

  3. "I was bluffing him, I played my KK overpair like a flush draw". WTF? Maybe look up the definition of "bluff" and "draw".

  4. multi tabling, i instant fold to that min raise. It always scream strength. Unless you play live, you gotta see his face and pour some wine onto it

  5. should have folded on the turn, after the raise imo. Maybe the opponent had a flush draw with 2 pair on the turn

  6. I think it was a good fold.

The idea that you were both pretty deep yet villain didn't 3-bet the button preflop with a fish in the big blind really widens his range to where he could even have T8. This is because if villain notices the player in BB is a fish (and knows that you know that) then he should be considering 3-betting himself because he should be wondering if you're not just open raising to isolate the fish's blinds. Two of the best times to 3-bet are when you have position postflop and when you see someone putting pressure on a fish and villain had BOTH of these advantages but still didn't 3Bet preflop, even though he was over 100xBB stack.

Add to that the info that the villain didn't raise the flop but did min-raise turn leads me to believe at first glance that he connected well with the board or else knows you don't like the hearts (did you do anything to notify villain that you didn't like the hearts is something to ponder). So, he either flopped the flush or turned the straight and you're drawing dead. Or, if he's still behind then he might have something with a lot of equity like Ace of hearts with a pair giving him about 13 outs on the turn = 28% equity to beat a pair so he would be correct to call a bet giving him pot odds of 2.6:1 (72% : 28%) or better, which is a bet of about 2/3 Pot. If he had the Ah8x for the flush draw with OESD he would have 15 outs for about 33% and could call a pot bet on the turn, which means he should consider raising like he did.

Finally, his larger almost pot bet on river seemed extremely calculated, which makes me believe he had a made hand that beat 1 pair. It's easy to inflate the pot by the river when there's 3 streets of betting and just taking away or adding a just few chips to pot on the streets before the river might amaze you at how the final river pot size changes (pot geometry). So, it's tough to go for 3 streets of value with only 1 pr on a coordinated board. Therefore, some options to minimize your losses a little more and give yourself a better price on your bluffs would be to maybe open a little less than 4x UTG preflop, and bet a little less than 2/3 Pot on flop – maybe even consider a check on the flop or turn (hard to say without sitting at the table with villain to observe his tendencies a bit).

Nh again! GL and never give up!

  7. Had a similar spot yesterday. Mucked QQ on the river.

Basically – everything got there. Villan could have a naked 8 or J9 or J10 or flush – and we are beat. Minraise screams strength.

Make a note. Move on. 🙂

PS – Villan played it perfectly even if he had 72o! This is a spot where power of position really comes into play. Hard to pull the trigger though. What do you think?

  8. This is a suck spot and a situation, where it really matter, that we are out of position. The deck is super wet and dangerous and hit Villains range much better than ours. If we bet into him, he can raise us for value or as a semibluff with a lot of different hands. And if we check, then he know, we are weak, and can easily blow us off our hand. So not only does he have a lot of actual equity in the pot, he also has a lot a bluff equity. And finally the 1 pair hand, which usually pay off our overpair, also dont like the board. So even when we are ahead, its really tough to get paid and win a big pot. So this is definitly a place to play defence and turn our hand into a bluffcatcher right from the flop.
